Update! NTO: nontraditional occupations
There are now seventeen 15-minute DVDs in the Her Own Words series on Women in Nontraditional Careers. The newest is Women in Agriculture, which features nineteen women who work in a variety of different agricultural careers. The nineteen women include dairy farmers, vegetable, fruit, and flower growers and sellers, a cheesemaker and a cheese seller, a honey producer, women who raise sheep, chickens, turkeys, and fish, and an agricultural broadcaster/journalist. They work in a variety of settings and present a diversity of views on agricultural life, from production to wholesale to retail. “Agriculture is such an exciting field,” one of them says. “Whether you like science or math or history or English, there is something that fits related to agriculture. Whether you like dealing with people or you want to sit behind a desk or you want to deal with animals, the opportunities are there in agriculture. And how exciting is that? It's the outdoors and it's animals and it's crops and it's just such an exciting field to be in. It's always changing; it's dynamic. The world relies on agriculture. We feed the world, so it's a field that's not going to go away. Sometimes you worry, oh, will this job be here in twenty years? Oh, some form of agriculture will be there, don't worry. It may change some, but it has to be there.”
All seventeen Nontraditional Careers programs feature women workers speaking directly to the audience in their own voices and in their own words. "All speak confidently about the work they do and why they like it. The series underscores the excitement and growth potential of career choices and changes. The concept throughout is that the women who do the work are the experts" (Labor Studies Journal). These short programs are used enthusiastically by teachers, counselors, career-exploration-day organizers, librarians, equity team members, and vocational professionals throughout the country. Because each woman speaks directly to the audience in her own voice and in her own words, the programs are suitable for many ages. The conversational style of the productions appeals to a wide variety of audiences, from upper-elementary school to community-college and adult audiences. The DVDs are available individually and in a 16-DVD box set.
