Update! NTO: nontraditional occupations
There are now sixteen 15-minute DVDs in the Her Own Words series on Women in Nontraditional Careers. The newest is Women in Electronics, which features nine women who work in a variety of different electronics careers. The nine women include electrical engineers, electronics technicians, and an author of technical books on electronics. Contrary to some stereotypes, "science and engineering are ultimately creative," says an electrical engineer. "You're creating new knowledge, you're creating new designs, you're creating new approaches. We didn't have cell phones thirty years ago and someone had to create that whole concept." She adds that there is more to creating a new product than just having an idea. "Also then actually creating the designs, creating the strategies for building those products and then building the infrastructure, like if you're going to build cellphones somebody has to create cellphone towers and repeater stations to get the signals out. So there's a lot of creativity. " An electronics technician who does not have an advanced degree emphasizes that she works extensively with electrical engineers. "They're a fascinating bunch of people to work for," she says.. "It's a lot of fun to work with people who are very, very smart and to watch what they can do when they combine forces to create something. "
All sixteen Nontraditional Careers programs feature women workers speaking directly to the audience in their own voices and in their own words. "All speak confidently about the work they do and why they like it. The series underscores the excitement and growth potential of career choices and changes. The concept throughout is that the women who do the work are the experts" (Labor Studies Journal). These short programs are used enthusiastically by teachers, counselors, career-exploration-day organizers, librarians, equity team members, and vocational professionals throughout the country. Because each woman speaks directly to the audience in her own voice and in her own words, the programs are suitable for many ages. The conversational style of the productions appeals to a wide variety of audiences, from upper-elementary school to community-college and adult audiences. The DVDs are available individually and in a 16-DVD box set.
